About

Cambodia’s economy is growing and the skyscrapers of Phenom Penh are testament to that. The World Bank reports Cambodia's growth projection at greater than 6%. However, not everyone is embracing the future with rosy optimism. Within the city glitz, more than 140,000 people endure conditions of destitution living in nearly 500 decrepit slums. These slums are being demolished forcefully, as land prices grow, making not just land but hope a scarce commodity for these communities.
VKF has partnered with insitutions that work towards adequate housing and quality of life for those caught up this urban parallax.

OUR PARTNERS

SMILE VILLAGE

SMILE Village is bringing smiles back to the marginalised people of Cambodia through a unique project of creating communities through adequate housing, giving them a decent quality of life.

About

While India has halved its poverty in the last three decades and continues to do so, many of its citizens still live in poverty, some abjectly so. While being one of the fastest growing economies in the world, it is also one seeing a steep rise in economic inequality within a society that is already fractured along the lines of caste, religion, region and Gender. Much needs to be done to strengthen public systems and citizen service delivery at the grassroots of the country.

Essentials of human life such a decent basic healthcare and good quality education can be a luxury for many communities in India, for whom this is beyond the reach. VKF is working at the intersection of stakeholders in the government, in the corporate sector and the nonprofit sector to attempt changes that are sustainably good for the Indian Society

About

The Liberian Republic is one of Africa's oldest but is currently grappling with several developmental challenges. The education system is still recovering from a prolonged and brutally destructive period of civil unrest from 1989 to 2003, during which 80% of schools were destroyed or damaged. The Long standing effects of these 14 years of civil war, compounded by the 2015 Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) outbreak has continued to take a toll on the fragile education system. The civil war also ravaged much of the country’s trained workforce, with many people having fled the country.

Less than half the Liberian population of 15- to 24-year-olds are literate, primary school enrolment is less than half, and about a third of children who start primary school do not finish school. Hence, the much needs to be done for the children in Liberia and their state of Education.

About

Rapid economic growth and strong country capacity have contributed to Filipinos living longer and healthier, thanks to significant investments in public health such as the Universal Health Care (UHC) Bill. However, the WHO reports that not all the benefits of this growth have reached the most vulnerable groups, and the health system remains fragmented. Deep inequities persist between regions, richand the poor, and different population groups.

In the face of these challenges VKF works with nonprofits in regions, in the areas of public health improvement and areas of Inclusion.

About

With one of the highest life expectancies and lowest fertility rates in the world, Singapore is on the cusp of an extreme demographic shift as the ASEANToday writes. While abject poverty is hard to spot, non-welfarist governance models may lead to an unexpected level of inequality among the ageing population. The rate of poverty among the ageing population has steadily risen over the years rising to an alarming 41% in 2011 ( N K Hoe, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy). Further the nation is also seeking to better serve its population of disabled individuals, currently at around 3%.

The challenge that lies ahead of the Singaporean society is to create safety-nets for their elderly and a higher quality of life for those with special needs, developmental or induced by old age.

Uganda is of Africa's youngest nations with more than 75% of their population less than 30 years old. However, the unemployment rate in the country is very high at 13.3%. While there are many start ups, 60% of them do not make it through their first year. There exists a large need to handhold self-driven initiatives while building forums where university learning meets the professional practice, resulting in a larger number of employable youth.

OUR PARTNERS
